It's hard to believe it with the unseasonably mild weather we've had this last few weeks! But nobody told the ponies how mild it is, so they've grown their winter coats as usual. As a result, it's not unusual to get home from a ride and find your mount a bit sweaty - even though you've been taking things fairly easy!
So don't be in a hurry to ride the last stretch home! Take your time and let your pony cool down! -- And if he is still a bit warm, be wary about turning him out if there's a strong wind. You don't want him to catch a chill.
And keep an eye on his forage! It's easy to think there's plenty of grass still around, but this grass has very little feed value. Mine are definitely choosing hay rather than what looks like lush grass!
Winter WILL come eventually. Before that happens, it's a good idea to have your pony's teeth checked. He can't benefit from the food you give him if he hasn't got good teeth to chew it with!
